A Territory of Quality
The area of Castelvetro boasts many merits and attractions in terms of scenery, culture and good food and wine, coupled with a strong economic and industrial base.
The local authority of Castelvetro has resolved to embrace environmentally sustainable policies, in order to promote a kind of development that will stimulate the economic growth both in short and long terms, without any detrimental effects on the local environment. Implementing such measures the Municipality promotes environmentally-friendly behaviours devoted to a conscious use of the land and a deeper knowledge of local values, culture, history and traditions.
The virtuous path taken by the Municipality includes:
-
1994 Membership of the National Association “Città del Vino” (City of Wine);
-
1998 Membership of The Union Art and Business Cities of Emilia Romagna Region;
-
2002 Membership of Aalborg Charta and Local Agenda21;
-
2003 Quality label for sustainable tourism and environment "Bandiera Arancione" of Touring Club Italiano;
-
2005 Award from Emilia Romagna Region Municipality characterized by mainly Tourism Economy and Art City;
-
2006 Introduction of an Environmental Management System, with UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 certification;
-
2008 Registration of EMAS project.

Because of the territory's high wine vocation attested by the production of "Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro", since 1994 the village joins the National Association "Città del Vino" (City of Wine), established in Siena in 1987, which brings together more than 500 municipalities related to wine by their history, tradition and culture, or in which wines obtained Denomination of Origin.
The Association promotes an economic and social development respectful of environment and local identities, without neglecting to enhance natural resources, scenic, artistic, historical and tourist sites. The wine competition "Selezione del Sindaco" (Mayor's Selection) and "Calici di Stelle" (Goblets of stars), a wine and food tasting, are just two of the best-known and initiatives proposed by the Association and successfully implemented by the Municipality of Castelvetro.

The official awarding occurred on May 10, 2003 during the Exhibition of Quality Tourism "The Travels of Outis" held in Milan from May 9 to 11.
The "Bandiera Arancione" is the quality label for inland and environmental tourism of Touring Club Italiano. It is assigned to localities that develop quality tourism. The promotion of cultural heritage, the environmental protection, the hospitality, the access to resources and their availability, the quality of accommodation, catering and local products are just some of the key elements to get the label.
The TCI has always been committed to the development of quality tourism and to the improvement of Italian cultural and environmental resources. The Bandiera Arancione, coordinated by the Research Centre (Touring Club Italiano's research and development unit), is a quality guarantee for tourists and a valuation tool for localities.
By reason of the actions taken by the Municipality in order to achieve the quality standards that have led to the award of Bandiera Arancione, in 2005 it was possible to achieve another significant milestone: a deliberation of the Regional Government of Emilia Romagna (B.U. N. 250, 14/02/2005 and N. 51, 16/03/2005) included Castelvetro di Modena in the list of art cities characterized by mainly tourism-based economy (LR N. 14/1999, Article 16).
