Visiting Castelvetro
Castelvetro has an area of 49.72 sq km and lies 18 km south-east from Modena. It is situated between the foothills of the Apennines (max. heights - 447 m: Monte Croce or Poggio Grande; 421 m: Madonna di Puianello) and the high Po Valley (min. height 66 m).
The territory of Castelvetro is grazed by Tiepido river and marked by the streams Nizzola and Guerro which are tributaries to the Panaro. The soil is very fertile and therefore suitable for agricultural use.
The gentle slopes of this area are often compared to the silhouette of the hills of Tuscany and are planted with vineyards. The most important wines are DOC Lambrusco Grasparossa wine and Trebbiano, another local grape used in the production of Balsamic Vinegar. In Castelvetro is cultivated the fodder that feed the livestock from which derives the milk used in the production of DOP Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.
The northern part of the territory is flat and rich in orchards where pears, apples, peaches and cherries are grown.
The southern part of the area is more chaotic and erosion and gullies dominate the panorama, especially near the Sanctuary of Puianello.
