Ca' Berti has been part of the history of Levizzano Rangone for nearly two centuries. Levizzano Rangone, one of Italy's “wine towns”, was founded by the Etruscans and boasts the oldest castle in the Modenese Apennines’ foothills. For five generations in fact, Vandelli family has been lovingly and competently tending its estate in these attractive hills that reach a height of 220 metres above sea level: 30 hectares of orchards and vineyards interspersed with lines of cypresses and rose bushes. Giuseppe Vandelli, the founding member of the family, started off as a cattle breeder in 1860 but it is his descendants Gisberto, Faustino, Adolfo and their children Gian Matteo, Simone and Veronica who have looked after and made the business grow so that the estate now produces some of the area's finest Lambrusco Grasparossa. There were difficult times that forced them to abandon the rearing of the special breed of white cows and concentrate on fruit-growing and then wine growing. After the second world war, the devastating vine louse meant that American vines, immune to the disease, had to be planted and only later Lambrusco vines were gradually reintroduced. The old tirelle (guiding wires) held up by elms were replaced by modern Belussi systems. Vandelli family was the first to bottle Lambrusco Grasparossa without mixing it with Sangiovese and Barbera, giving it a new dignity: today Lambrusco Grasparossa is recognized all over the world and is protected by trademark DOP.
